Help - can't hear when making phone calls suddenly on iPhone 5

I feel like I've switched off a setting somewhere. I can't hear anything on my phone when trying to make calls. Games still play sound and I can call and hear through blue tooth. Any ideas how to fix this? I had the problem before today and upgraded the os but that didn't help

Does speakerphone work also? It sounds like something with the earpiece, which might be a hardware issue.

Yes the speaker works. I really hope it's not a hardware issue. I'm not ready to replace it yet :-(
