I know I'm late to ride the Blu-ray train, but I am, once and for all. Some of you will tell me to search Google about this, but I did and it only got me more confused. I need to know what should I be looking at to know which model/brand is better and more durable.

If someone is kind enough to explain Blu-ray players' basics to me, I'll be more than grateful.

Note that I'm not interested about streaming, downloading and using video internet services (Netflix, Hulu, etc). I live in Lebanon and internet speeds are abysmal. And I would like just one important thing, a USB hub to connect my external 2TB drive which has over 100 movies, and I want the player to be able to read them, since they're in ".mov", ".avi" and ".mkv" formats.

Thanks a lot!

Down the rabbit hole
I've got a Samsung BD-D5300 that might be OK for what you need. I bought it to play videos from my NAS and internet streaming services but it's been a ton of work to make it perform as advertised. It does start up faster than the last Samsung I had, which is something many complained about. This one has USB ports front and rear and it seems to have no issue playing a movies from them. Firmware updates, which Samsung seems to release about once per quarter, seem to cause all kinds of havoc so people tend to disable the auto-update feature. On the plus side, this player produces eye-popping picture quality when paired with my Samsung LCD. It even does a good job of up-converting DVDs to approximate true HD as best it can.
