Hi all, I am new here!

I bought a Mac Pro 7.1 and I'd like to expand storage but I am confused by the compatibility issues. I saw several tutorials on Youtube of people installing a Samsung Evo Plus 970 1TB without performing any firmware upgrade and working out of the box.

Could you help me understand if the firmware upgrades are still necessary?

I have my eyes on MZ-V7S2T0 Evo Plus 970 2TB but I'd like to avoid fiddling with the installation.

Thank you!

I have Samsung Evo Plus 970 2TB in Kryo M.2 card and it works without any issue since installation. All new Evo disks since autumn's month of 2019 are already shipped with new firmware - so no issues at all. Just install them and initialize in MacOS.

Just to confirm, the EVO 970 Plus 2TB worked as expected out of the box just after formatting.
I have used a "SupaGeek M.2 PCIe SSD a PCIe Express 3.0 x4" Adaptor and I am getting slightly higher read / write speed (3.08GB / 3.015GB) than with the Mac factory drive.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I installed a 2TB Corsair MP600 SSD (APFS) and it failed a few months after initial use. Speed testing has shown poor performance levels so have been using it for temporary files. I reformatted it using Mac OS Extended FS. Performance has returned to expected levels.
