A friend got a new iPhone, set it up to sync contacts from her personal outlook account and then for some reason she deleted her contacts on Outlook. On the next iPhone sync all her contacts on the iPhone were deleted. So is there anyway to get all the contacts back and how does the sync work for future reference, does itunes check to see where the contact was created (Outlook or iPhone) and based on that it deletes or updates the other? THanks

Contacts syncing is a two-way sync. If you delete a contact in Outlook, it is deleted in the iPhone and vice versa. Since you deleted all the contacts in Outlook and you then synced, it deleted all your contacts on the iPhone.

If you restore from a backup you can get the contacts back on your phone.

In the future, you might want to look into online syncing as a backup, if you somehow lost your contacts. I use Funambol.
