Long post ahead….

Hi everyone! Joined this website to ask this question. I’m upgrading from a Macbook 2011 - haven’t used it in 2 years because it can’t stay on for more than 20mins. I currently use an iMac 2015. My parents gave it to me since they pretty content with their ipads.

So I need a new laptop for both work and hobbies. I’m part of a logistics company so I need a lot of MS Excel. I have a plant business on the side and also assist in running 2 small boutique hotels so aside from excel I use luminar (sub for lightroom), affinity photo and publisher (equivalent to adobe photoshop and illustrator).

For hobbies, I’m into photography and videography so I also use the above softwares for non-work stuff. I also edit videos in filmora X but looking to upgrade to final cut pro in a year or so. I process a lot of 4k videos and the latest gopros (i have the hero 9) now have 5k. I’m into those adventure/action videos as well. The computer I currently use (2015 imac) is sort of a pain to work with. It always crashes when using luminar and filmora. I don’t even bother opening them at the same time.

And in addition to work and hobbies, of course there’s regular consumer things like Netflix, youtube, browsing, etc. I also assist in running 2 small boutique hotels so my social media accounts usually stay open in safari.

So my question is what specs would be right for me? I was looking into the 14” with 10 CPU and 16GB unified memory….but then I was thinking maybe the 16GB and 32GB are for those whose work requires more computer work/processing than mine? I was also considering the 13” then just upgrade the unified memory to 16”? I’m looking to use this for 6 years… is the 13” with 8cpu and 16 uni memory enough for me or should I “future proof” my investment and go for the 14” 10cpu with 16gb?

I’m not the best when it comes to understanding specs. Thanks in advance!

I suggest the 14” base model (8 cpu 14 gpu 16GB RAM) but with 1TB SSD is a kind of a sweet spot for great performance and screen for the price.
Anything beyond that is gravy. (Expensive gravy.)

I can’t recommend 8GB RAM for anyone who wants it to last many years with more than the lightest of tasks, and once you get 16GB for the 13”, the base 14” is only $300 more, for the same size SSD.

The 13" MBP is a very capable machine, but considering this part of your activity, the 14" looks more suitable. If your budget allows, I would answer this question

for myself as follows: I would go for the 14" 10cpu indeed, but with 32 GB RAM.
