I'm a college girl and can't find anyone to help and really don't understand what is going on. So I updated my computer and it asked if I wanted to put everything in icloud. I said sure, but then went in and unchecked it since I don't have other mac devices. It asked if I was sure cuz it would delete everything from icloud on the mac (I thought it just meant stuff from icloud, not everything associated with it) and it wiped my ical blank. I cannot even begin to explain how important everything in that calendar was. It is my life.

So I deleted everything at 5:25. I went into time machine and there was a window from 5:14. (I updated my computer around 5:00). I found the calendar app and hit "restore" and it just said that that it couldn't be modified or deleted because Mac OS X needs it. Well obviously... but I'm not trying to delete it. I made sure I had quit calendar and went back and tried it again but got the same thing.

I backed up my computer a few months ago on an external drive so I plugged that in but couldn't restore my ical from it because they're now 2 incompatible versions. I put it on my friend's computer cuz she has an older one and I got the same "can't be modified or deleted cuz Mac OS X needs it" message.

My biggest problem is instead of having a 24-hour memory, my time machine is only remembering things for around 45 minutes. So that 5:14 window was replaced with a 6:03 window, which was then replaced with a 6:52 window. Now I have no old version of the calendar to restore even if I could get it to work!!!

Someone PLEASE help me I am so upset and so confused...

From what you say, I don't think you deleted the APPLICATION iCal, but simply deleted your iCloud account from iCal and all your dates disappeared.

If you removed your iCloud account from your iCal app, then yes, everything will disappear. If you add the iCloud account back onto iCal, everything will reappear.

Secondly: backup more frequently!

Go a download/run download the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.3 (Combo). It will put those program back and fix Time Machine.

In the future it's not a good idea to deinstall core included programs. Just don't use them for other programs you like.

Good Luck.

If I understand her correctly she still has iCal but not the data and wasn't able to restore it from an earlier version. I suppose it's possible that after installing the upgrade you recommend she'll be able to use the older version she has on an external drive.

OP, I would try calling support and see if they can help you restore the older data you have on the external drive. And like you I don't understand why OSX deletes local files if you choose not to use iCloud. Did you by any chance try logging in to icloud.com and see if by chance there may be something there? I'm guessing probably not but give a try anyway.

Good luck.
