Hi everyone,

TLDR; HALP! Can you tell what's going on from the log below?

---
Here's what's been happening, and what I've tried:

I'm in need of some help finding out where the cause of my problem lies. I'm not even sure if it's hardware or software at this point.

Recently the macbook crashed and wouldn't book. The startup progress bar would fill up to 1/3 completion, but then it would restart (or shut down, I don't recall which).
I 'repaired' the disk and volume using Disk Utility in recovery mode. No improvement. (The disk's S.M.A.R.T. status is 'Verified')
I reinstalled the OS, which upgraded the macbook to High Sierra.
That worked for a while, but now it's crashing again. It will work for some indeterminate amount of time, sometimes for hours, then it'll crash.

At those times when it won't start up, the screen sometimes displays vertical pink stripes at the boot screen (I do get the apple logo, and progress bar. It just doesn't always complete).

I've thought it might be my gfx card overheating so I used gfxCardStatus to force it to use one gfx card mode or the other (Integrated vs Discrete). It appears to work better on Integrated mode, but it still crashes sometimes.

So... I'm kind of at a loss. Do I need a new hard drive, a new logic board, memory, or is this just a software issue and something must be replaced.
How do I diagnose this?

Looks like you have Horndis v6 installed, and the latest is v9. Can you start in safe mode and remove that kext and see if that helps?

Also, what kind of Mac are you talking about?

It's an early 2011 Macbook Pro, 2.3GHz, 17"

Ok, I don't know what a kext is, but I can find out. Will report back once that's done. Thanks for the tip!
Thankfully my laptop is working... for now, so I can do that.

@kohlson
From what I'm reading, Horndis is used for USB tethering. I have 3 questions:
1) Is there any reason to install Horndis 9 if I don't care about USB tethering?
2) Have you encountered this issue before, where an outdated version of Horndis can cause OSX to crash?
3) Could that cause a crash even if I have no USB devices plugged in?

Anyway, I've deleted the Horndis kext, but now that I know what it's for I'm feeling doubtful that it could be causing the crashes.
[doublepost=1531201355][/doublepost]Oh! I think I found what the problem is.

After I wrote my last message I turned gfxCardStatus off to let this Horndis thing play out. It crashed almost instantly when switching to Discreet graphics mode.
Apparently, High Sierra (and to a lesser extent, Sierra) does not play well with the Radeon gfx card inside the 2011 MacBook Pros.
The workaround is to disable it entirely (fine by me, I don't really need intensive graphics processing these days):

Your model MBP is one affected by "Radeongate" but your kernel panic report isn't like what others with this GPU problem typically looks like. That may be because it looks like there's something missing and/or a combination of two kernel panics? - I'm not sure. There's a couple of processes mentioned in your log - one is the (Google?) "Backup and Sync" which would depend on the Horndis kernel extension if your were tethering and that made me think, like the other poster, that it was the Horndis kernel extension or the Backup and Sync.

The part of the kernel panic that seems missing is right after

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
com.apple.iokit.IOAcceleratorFamily2(378.18.1)[BAA0383C-9650-3934-B04A-

This is obviously truncated because the "[BAA0383C-9650-3934-B04A-" would be closed by a right bracket.

If you open the Console app (in the /Applications/Utilities folder), select "System Reports and in the second column, look for a line(s) that starts with "Kernel_" and ends with ".panic". If you find the corresponding report that is what you posted above and it has more text than what you have, or if there is another kernel panic report, post it and we can see if it resembles with the typical GPU kernel panic report looks like.

I'm not sure what else I can do about Horndis. I removed it, as per kohlson's suggestion, and I'm just going to leave it like that since I don't care much about tethering at the moment.

As for the log, it's strange that it's truncated like that. I'm not sure why that is, but that's the full log I have. I copied and pasted all that text at the same time, including the parts below the truncated piece.
For now I think it makes sense to work with the assumption that this indeed a "Radeongate" issue. Thank you for that, it gives me a keyword to do some more research.

Great research in there! Looks like someone came up with a solution to fix the brightness buttons and the sleep/closed lid functionality.
Phew, I'm only slightly surprised that Apple hasn't fixed this issue yet. They've demonstrated time and time again that they don't care much about older models or the users of those models.

I double-checked in Console, and the report is the same as I posted above, including the truncated part.
Maybe it crashed before completing the report?

A 17" 2011 MacBook Pro...?

... RadeonGate.

Yeah - I think we've realized it's a prime suspect.

The kernel panic log may be saved to NVRAM and may be truncated if it's too large. That's not something that I've see on kernel panic logs posted here but it could happen. But something may have happened where it didn't properly write what was in the NVRAM to the disk and that's why it kind of looks like 2 kernel panics. In your case it's unfortunate it truncated because that one last line was looking more like the Retina 2012 MBP GPU kernel panic (Nvidia) than the typical "Radeongate" kernel panic. This is a minor issue compared to the (probable) GPU issues you're having. In this case, resetting the NVRAM may help with the kernel panic log issue if you haven't done so already. You might also want to try a SMC reset. It's not likely to solve anything but it won't hurt (you lose the saved NVRAM settings - read the link).

I performed the nvram hacks above, and it worked as expected! No more crashing :)
My macbook was still getting pretty hot though, so I went the extra step and did this hardware modification:

Holy crap those resistors are tiny. I'm so lucky to have excellent eyesight. I know many of my friends would not be able to do this.

Risky! But it worked! Now, as far as OSX is concerned, there is no dGPU in this thing and it's running much cooler.
Success!

Thanks for the diagnostics help everyone. You rock!
:D
