OK so I droped my 1st gen iphone from a pretty high height the back is dented and now the screen won't display. The screen won't light up or show anything at all? But when I touch the screen I can hear it working.

My questions are.

What needs to be replaced? the screen seems to be ok and touch capibilitys work.

What the heck is a digitizer?

Where can I get the lcd/digitizer/screen combo for cheap?

Thanks in advance, Brett

You're saying that you can hear it working, like the unlock sound, if that's enabled? If so, there MIGHT be hope. You can try and find a replacement screen, but I don't think it'll be too much of a help. I know that you can get iPhones for about $300 on eBay, if lucky. It might be cheaper than a replacement.

Not sure what the policy is on posting links...

Umm...

I'm not sure what the policy is on this forum for posting links to other websites that sell stuff.

So I won't do that. Instead, check out this youtube video and watch the guy replace the screen. Then glance over to the right and check out the link in the video description...

You'll notice that it's a link to a parts store....

Sorry to tell u bud, but ur iPhone is busted. I suggest you salvage what you can by eBaying it "as is." That way it's not a total loss.

ya this kinda sucks for you, also this may not have been the best place to post this since it has nothing to do with hacks, go to the tips/help section or the main iPhone sections where more people can sympathize. good luck

Ouch. eBay is a good place to start. They sell the glass, but I am not sure about the other stuff. I searched on "iphone glass replacement" and got 69 items. Good luck!

I was in same situation as you, dropped my iPhone on asphalt and cracked screen just two weeks before lunch of 3G.
I didn’t have intention to upgrade but after talking to two people that work at apple store I decided to upgrade.
They were telling me save money and get new one, which made sense. Two days after lunch of 3G I found stock at Buffalo NY store and
decided to get new one. I took my old phone with me and after purchase I got my phone out and showed that to the sales person she was like they might not be able to fix it for you.. yada, yada, yada but she put me on the list to talk to genius.
After 40 minutes guy show up in front of me, now this guy was multitasking big time he had one iMac open other customer filing out some forms and me. I told him I dropped my iPhone and screen broke. He took iPhone with him in the back room and short time letter he comes back with white box, at this time I know that I would have to pay for it so I took my card out, he come back with paper work and says “You know there is charge of $249 for replacement” there wasn’t any emotional drama since I kiss my money good buy on a way over to the store so I sad “yes”
Then he goes “BUT SINCE YOU DID’T TRY TO ******** ME THERE IS NO CHARGE” so i got as new 16gb 2G iPhone repaired for Free.

I love Apple in store customer experience, you pay little bit more for there products but I get a smile on my face every time I exit that store:)

Good to see that stories like this are still happening. I had the same thing happen just the other day, got a crack that doesn't really affect the phone too much on the outside of it, it just hurts me to look at it (emotionally)

Don't mean to hijack this thread... but

My question is:

1) I'm from Canada and I have a 1G 16 gig, obviously they never "came out here" so I guess I would have to drive across the border to see a genious...?"

2) I am currently in Italy, could I try here if I could find an Apple store???
