after three tries it just spits out a blank imation 8x DVD +RW disc. I tried it on my friends laptop which is the exact same configuration and it recognizes it. All other discs seem to work fine, what gives???

does his machine have the same dvd drive as yours? apple uses at least two different kind of drives, hitachi-lg and matshita i think. each one of these drives have some dvd brands they 'like' and some they don't 'like' :D

I confirm that the DVD drive of my friend's MBP is of a different brand (LG?) which resolves my issue! Thanks for the tip which saved me from having to take my MBP to the apple store and waste time asking for an exchange or repair!!!
BTW I posted this same message on the apple forum but nobody seems to have a clue!
