Hi all,

I tried searching but wasn't able to find a solution to my problem. I just bought a refurbished Mac Pro 5,1 and swapped the 2.8GHz Quad for a 3.33GHz Hex and now my fan speeds are going crazy because of the CPU A, Core 0 reading.

I'm not sure what to do since I've spend the past few days researching a solution:

  • I've tried reapplying Thermal Compound but that didn't make a change.
  • I've tried checking all the sensors and everything is reading "normal"
  • I tried the SMC/NVRAM reset, but it did not change anything.

I'm hesitant to take it into a store with a Genius since I swapped the CPU myself, but I may end up having to. Does anybody think the CPU A, Core 0 reading could be due to the Thermal Compound needing a break-in period? There's no way the computer should be sounding this loud just sitting idle.

I greatly appreciate any help! I'm really frustrated since I've spent so much on the machine already :(

Carefully look through the heatsink cover and look to see if the fan cable connector is fully seated. You might even stick a small screwdriver through the slot and push it down. If the connector slips slightly out of the holding clips and doesn't fully seat when the heatsink is replaced, all your fans will run full speed as a precaution since your system thinks that fan isn't running.

OH MY GOD HOWARD, I COULD KISS YOU!!!

I took the tray out and found that one of the wires was hanging out a bit from within the heat sink... sure enough on the next boot... QUIET AS A MOUSE!!!

I'm ecstatic right now! I've been stressed the past few days thinking it was an hardware issue! Thanks again Howard, you've made my day! :D

No problem ... glad it worked for you.

I had the same problem after updating my 12-core to 3.33GHz ... I know the anguish you went through!
