I updated a G4 machine today that hasn't had a software update since 2004. I downloaded pretty much everything they had. When I rebooted my Final Cut no longer recognizes my Firewire. This is a machine at work and we need this up and running. Can anyone help?

PS - I tried getting rid of preferences file, no luck.

Does it show up in system profiler or work in any other app? It might help if you mentioned what versions of software you are using (Final cut, and osx versions). By 'they' I assume you mean apple updates, and I haven't heard of any updates causing firewire malfunction.

The standard fix for anything having gone wrong after an update is: Repair disk permissions, failing that, downgrade what you think is the culprit (in your case this might be tricky, but with more info we might be able to help more).

Good luck

I was upgrading to the newest version of OSX. It hasn't 'been updated in 2 years, so I'm not sure which one it had before.

We have Final Cut Pro 4.5

Three things to try:

1) The obvious: Repair permissions, reset PRAM.

if no luck...

2) Reset NVRAM using Open Firmware: hold down command-O-F at at startup, type "reset-nvram" "reset-all".

if still no luck...

3) Try a full reset: Unplug the computer from the wall, press the power button on the front (it should flash for a second), then pull out the motherboard battery. Wait at least 15 minutes, preferably at least an hour.

Put everything back together and boot up. I know that #3 has fixed firewire problems for some people, although these were usually caused by hardware issues not a software update. Worth a try, though. Oh, and I've heard people say that waiting overnight can work if an hour doesn't, but the only time I had success with this method it only took 20 minutes or so.

One more thing: It sounds like you're having camera trouble, but if it's drive problems, your drive might need a firmware update, espeically if it's an older Oxford 911-based case.

[Edit: You might also try booting from the OS install discs and running Disk Utillity to check the drive for errors, though this is a longshot. Remember NOT to run repair permissioins when booted from the install disc, though--just the disk repair.]

If it hasn't been update in 2 years, it can't be running Tiger, so it must still be running some earlier. To confirm this you can click the apple, and select 'about this mac' and it will say 'Mac OS X' then underneath will read: Version *blah*. This number is important too. :)
