Help for someone thinking about JB'ing for the first time!

Hello all!

I'm thinking about going the way of the jailbreak as of late. I honestly only want to gain two things from it. I would really like the 3G Unrestrictor and some way to get tethering back. Seems like a jailbreak is the only way to do this. I'm not really at all I interested in any customizing, themes etc. Just want these two things. I just inherited a slingbox solo, so I'd like to be able to stream over 3G when I finally hook it up. I would also enjoy the full quality stream of YouTube instead of the crummy wifi quality. Seems that 3G Unrestrictor is the only Cydia app that supports this?

Now, please excuse my ignorance if this has been discussed ad naseum on here, but to someone new all the lingo gets rather confusing and I still haven't found a tutorial that's straightforward for JBing a 3GS on 3.1.2 using a Mac. Am I correct in thinking that JBing this firmware/phone combo is fairly new?

Could someone help me out and point me to a safe, secure way to JB my phone so I can enable these features? Thanks so much in advance. Once again, only really interested in these two things at the moment.

It's pretty simple:

1-Have your 3GS on 3.1.2
2-Download blackra1n here
3-Connect your 3GS to your computer and launch the blackra1n program.
4-Click “make it ra1n” and let the application run. A picture of George Hotz will appear while your device is in recovery mode.
5-Wait until your 3GS automatically reboots. A new blackra1n app icon will appear on the springboard. Click the blackra1n icon to launch blackra1n on your 3GS.
6-From here you will be able to install Cydia, Rock, or Icy on your device.
7-Then search for the programs you want.
