Hi, I have a feeling this is a noobey question but I am new to Mac OSX.

When i delete things on my MacBook pro (10.8.2) and empty the trash it doesn't seem to free up any space why is this?

Also why do i have 104gb of backups on my MacBook when i have an external HDD I use for time machine which has 124gb of backups on it?

Any help to understand this would be great thanks.

Thanks for the replies.

In about this mac it says i have 32gb of movies but i have deleted most of them now so does it say they are still there because of time machine backups?

Surely if they are backups they would come under backups not movies?

Are you looking at this?

You can see the local backups on the right in purple. If you turn Time Machine off then back on, that will zero out.

The other issue may be related the Movies section being screwed up in Mountain Lion. See how mine says 18.45EB (?). That is wrong. If I reindex Spotlight to fix this bug, it will then show about 2GB, which is accurate... then a few days later I get this 18.45EB business back again.

You try using the free OmniDisksweeper app to get a better picture of what you have.

That is because the Finder does not include the space used my those mobile backups in its calculation. Just turn Time Machine off then back on and you will see that space go to zero then Finder and the other screen will match.
