Worked like a dream for the last 4 months. Today, for the first time ever, I got the "You must restart" message. Numerous bad things have happpened since that message- repeated crashes of Surfari (this is sent using FireFox), cursor lockups, and several other forced restarts. The cursor frequently shows with two vertical purple lines. Nothing seems to be reported as wrong in System Profiler.

Possibile explanations: (1)it's too hot in my house- this is the hottest day since I've owned it and it's about 86 F in this room; (2) I installed the new QuickTime update last night; (3) Other ideas?

Suggestions welcome. Thanks.

It almost sounds like you have bad RAM, but I would be a bit more suspicious of your recent installation of quicktime... not sure though...

Download the temperature widget and tell me what it says. BTW, I'm in Connecticut right now and until it rained, it was so freaking muggy. It was rediculous. AC in this room keeps my pb running at very cool temperatures.

>>It almost sounds like you have bad RAM<<

That occurred to me, since when I got it I filled it up with Crucial memory. The diagnostics did say the memory was "OK" -- I don't know how conclusive that is.

>>Download the temperature widget and tell me what it says.<<

Unfortunately, things have deteriorated and I couldn't get restarted at all (now on a Dell desktop). I will give it a couple of hours to cool off and see if that helps (maybe even run the AC) and then go for that widget.

Thanks, guys.

That's probably not good if that thing picks up a problem... it rarely detects anything. Maybe someone has more knowledgeable advice, but I'd say bring it in to your retail store and tell them about it.

They'll probably give you that "we can't re-create the problem" crap that they always give everyone, just so they don't have to do anything. If you paid for applecare, try calling them first.

Update

I ran the Apple Hardware Test. Memory and everything else passed, except for video RAM, which produced an error code.
not that it would help me, but i'm sure would help others, do you know the error code?

Ah... well then you need to buy a birthday cake and rub it over your video card. C'mon now.

NEXT!

final report

I have to say that I was pleased with Apple's service. I took it to a Retail Store on Friday, June 9, in the evening. They told me it would take about a week and a half but it arrived at my office the following Wednesday morning, fixed at no charge.
