EQPT:
1TB WD Elements micro usb External hard drive, about 3 years old, well used.

PROBLEM:
iMac OSX, won't appear on desktop, was fine until a couple of days ago, micro usb socket seems a little loose.

- Won't mount to computer.
- asked to "initialize, ignore, eject"

- shows in disk utility as hard drive only (factory name. not name I gave it)
- No sub volume listed, so can't run disk repair or verify, won't eject (i guess because it doesn't mount)

The hardrive light is on, the drive vibrates/ starts up as normal and dies down when i choose eject.

SOLUTIONS TRIED:
- New cable - SAME THING
- Different Mac x 2- SAME THING

I can't remember if I formatted it as Journeled/ Fat 32 etc... I think it was formatted for mac use only.

I haven't connected it to my PC yet as i'm worried it might format it.

I've read online you CAN'T take this model out of the casing and stick it in a HD dock because of parts soldered to it.

I'm going to run disk warrior , but don't expect it to help as I have no volume listed.

I have nearly 1GB of data I DESPERATELY need back, but have made my peace with it being gone at this point if need be.

IS IT ALL OVER?

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Your PC wont delete it unless you specifically tell it to delete or format it. Under my version of Windows 7 if a hard drive is "playing up" then it brings up a box asking if you would like to correct errors when the hard drive is plugged in. Ive allowed that to run its course (it doesn't look as if its doing anything initially) and its sorted all probs out.

The problem seems to be in mounting the disk, I'm guessing because OS X doesn't see a partition map on it. This probably won't help, but you could try to mount it from Terminal.app -- maybe the command line will give you some useful error message...

Open Terminal.app
Issue the command diskutil list
Find the disk name, e.g., disk1 or disk2 or disk3...
Issue the command diskutil mountdisk disk1 (or 2 or 3...)

My system responds with "Volume(s) mounted successfully."

Yours?
