I also put this in the ipod section, but I thought I might get more help here.

2 of my kids have ver 4 ipod touches and I want to update them to ios5.
The problem is they were not originally set up with my computer...what options do I have so that I don't lose all their music etc?

I asked this on another site and got this answer...

"You can plug them in and update their iPods but first prevent iTunes from syncing with their iPods or their music will disappear. In iTunes go to Edit, Preferences, Devices, check the box that says prevent iPods iPads iPhones from syncing automatically.. 99% sure on this."

Any help?
Thanks.

I don't think that's possible! The update will automatically wipe the device anyways. That's why apple always mention to BACK UP YOUR DEVICE before updating!

And if the music was bought on itunes you can always re download them from icloud!

Ya. You can update the OS on any computer that has iTunes installed. After the update is installed, just say no when you are asked if you want to sync with this computer. You will get a notification saying "this isn't the computer with which the device is synced - do you want to sync with this computer." Say no sync. Then plug the device into the computer it normally syncs with and do a sync (after the upgrade).

I do this every time because I have to update on my laptop and sync with my desktop. Works just fine.

EDIT: You might backup your devices on the "mother" computer before installing on the other one, as per the above poster.

You can download one of the many applications that give you access to the files on the iPod and back them up.

Then add them to your iTunes library and do the upgrade?
