my fiance and i have two homes that we travel back and forth between. we like to take movies with us at times, however, we hate having to carry dvds whenever we travel. these are dvd's we bought, and we refuse to buy multiple copies of the same dvds to have in two places. We already spent our hard-earned money on these dvd's and refuse to do so again. i'd rather burn them. can I do this with my superdrive imac g4 and maybe iDVD or Panther? Or must I buy some other software?

Thanks for any help.

pmpknetr21, may I introduce all those with such high morals that they feel the need to tell you that what you're doing is "illegal"...

how to burn dvds

I just got started with this myself.
This site has a lot of info about dvd encoding and copy protection.
by Jim Taylor, DVD Demystified FAQ web site. http://dvddemystified.com/

So far I downloaded DVDInfoX.
http://www.opuscc.com/download/FTP/AE564356/DVDInfoX1.0.2.sit

With no DVD in the drive, use this to determine the exact specs of your dvd-rw drive. Whe the results are shown, selct all then copy them and paste them into a textedit file for later review if there are any problems, you'll need to know the drive info. Apparently info from Apple System Profiler is not enough.
Next I got DVD Backup 1.3.
http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/DVDbackup.html
With this freeware, you can drag a whole DVD over the open application window and then select Process Files
Beware of 2 things:
(1) You must first play the dvd using the Apple DVD Player app so the dvd is recognized by the machine and DVD Backup.
(2) When you download or rip the dvd it goes to a folder called Video_TS.
When you do your second DVD, if you have not already burned a copy of the first one, be sure to rename the folder Video_TS 2 or save to a different folder so it does not overwrite your first dvd files.
You will need a copy of Roxio Toast Platinum. I ordered mine today, then we can take this to the next step. I already ripped a few dvd's so I am ready as soon as the software arrives. Check out these web pages I mentioned and see if the instructions are useful. Apparently this is easier to do on a winbloze peecee. Joe40

Is it? Can't you legally make one (1) copy of something that you own for personal archival use only?

I have no idea, and personally I couldn't care less. But you can be sure that in any thread like this someone will pop up to make their disapproval heard .

I knew that there would b disapproval, but I just can't bring myself to buy the same thing twice, ya know? I already own it. It's my property. Anyways, I'll definately try your suggestions and thanks alot.
