help!! i have my mates old iphone which was on O2

Hi guys, thanks for taking the time out to hopefully help me out.
What it is right is I have bought my mates 3gs off him. Bare with me now, lol. I have had it unlocked to vodaphone and i have had it working perfectly fine, i.e. making calls receiving and surfing the net the problem is that every so often my signal will die then i won’t be able to get it back. Sometimes i can reboot it, take my sim out an back again and it works fine. But then other times i struggle to get it back at all. Anyone have any suggestions??
