HELP!!!! I installed OS X on Mac Clones!!!

Okay, so i've installed OS 10.2 Jaguar on two PowerComputing Mac Clones, using Xpostfacto. One of them is a PowerCenter Pro 240, the other is PowerTower Pro 200.

I am writing this on the PowerTower Pro 200, because the PowerCenter Pro s dead.

OS X runs terribly slow and I want to get rid of it, but the computer won't boot up in OS 9. I can't get the ****ing thing to boot up in 9, so I can't delete OS X. I don't have a OS 9.1 Install CD, so I can't boot up on that. All I have are the Jaguar Disks, OS 10.0 and 10.1 disks, and a 9.2.1 disk. The computer will not boot up on any of them. This is urgent because I need to use the PLP printer, which will not work with OS X, and I don't even have word for OS 9 on this computer, because it's on the dead one and... agh. Anyway, down to the point. I need to get OS X off this computer.

As for the other one.... when I start it up, it starts as if it's going into 9, but it has a ? on the screen, in the floppy disk icon. When I insert a jaguar disk or something of the sort, it turnes into a smiley face, but never continues. If I don't get this fixed by tonight, I'm going to have to hire somebody to come and do it at my expense, even though these are my parents computers, because i'm the one who screwed them up.

I've never tried it on the clones, and I don't know if it's a new world rom only thing, but try holding down option when you boot up to select the startup volume.

of course, if changing the startup volume from X doesn't do it for you, it sounds like your installation of 9 may be hosed.

That, by the way, would suck.

Have you tried the Apple support site to download 9.0 or 9.1 images?

I have CD-ROMs but the problem I've found is that my PowerCenter didn't like 9.2.x for some reason that I've forgotten and that the CD-ROM drives weren't Apple ROM drives so the CD driver won't support them and you need either an Apple ROM drive or a 3rd party driver like those which came with them.

But isn't installing OSX on non Apple hardware illegal? Does the OSX licence permit this sort of installation? I realise it was valid for OS9, but is it valid also for OSX?

Just wondering if anyone knows for sure? Otherwise the moderators might have to close this thread

Uh, weren't these Apple branded computers, not generic or something?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think this is like an Intel type situation or something.

You're wrong. Power Computing built them during the Mac Clone years. Motorola and UMAX made variants as well.

Macgeek -- going ahead and installing OSX whilst not having a bootable OS9 CD or a backup of the original hard drive on another disk (internal ATA, external SCSI or Zip) was, umm... inadvisable.

You b0rked the OS9 install with the OSX and can't go back in time. It's time to find a bootable 9.0. Contact your local Mac user's group, surely there will be some packrat who has CDs they can sell you.

Okay, I am now writing this on the PowerTower Pro running OS 9. All's good with this machine, except for the fact that I can't get the printer to work. No matter what SCSI ID I put it on, the computer wont start up with it plugged in.... BUT that doesn't matter if I can get the PowerCenter Pro working.

The PowerCenter Pro starts up in 9 even though it has X on as well, but it has the ? in the floppy disk icon at startup, and theres basically nothing I can do so far.....

Can you use an ethernet cross-over cable or firewire connection to see the files on the other, non-booting computer? Or do you need the computer to be booted in order for the other one to see the files
Now that you have the first one running OS9, can't you create a boot disk image from it, and start the second one? (I really have no idea about these things)

It is legal.

That hardware came with a version of the Mac OS originally and the manufacturer was given both the ROM and logic board specification from Apple. Those items represent your license to use all future Mac OS versions.

Apple has never had any problems with XPostFacto because it is only used for installing Mac OS X on systems that would otherwise qualify for a Mac OS X license... but just are not supported by Apple.

Further, Power Computing is now just as much a part of Apple as NeXT is. Apple acquired them when they closed out the cloning.
