Help Identifying Loading/Working Glyph in Status Bar

Hello all,

Was wondering if anyone was aware what the purpose/meaning of the bouncing loading symbol showing in my status bar is? I don't recall ever seeing it before today, and I was not able to find it referenced on Apple's "Status icons and symbols on your iPhone" page.

UDisc -- a disc golf scorekeeping app. Are third party apps able to place items in the status bar? It only exists in that one app and does not stay when I go to my home screen.
