Not as far as I am aware, the items you see on your Desktop are actually in a folder called Desktop which is part of your Home folders.

You could do exactly what you said:
Create 2 folders on the desktop, one named "Work" the other "Games".
Fill the "Work" folder with shortcuts to your work files and apps.
Fill the "Games" folder with shortcuts to your Games.
Open the "Work" folder on Desktop 1, and the "Games" folder on Desktop 2.

It might not be what you were thinking, but it would have the same effect, and you would be able to pull the folder's window in front of the apps.

I actually am still using Snow Leopard, 2 versions before Mountain Lion, since I think is handled Spaces, or Desktops better than Mission Control. I have 9 Spaces in a 3 by 3 grid, something that can't be done in ML. this way I can organize my tasks into each Space, and if I need to get to the desktop, I just which to an empty Space.

What about using Spaces (part of Mission Control)? One desktop will have your folder of shortcuts or whatever, the second one your other folder of shortcuts?
