I need help in picking the right iPad for me.

Uses:
- Note writing/studying
- I use notability
- I need more space than my current iPad (32 GB)

Not Using For:
- I do not game
- I do not listen to music
- Rare use it for YouTube

Background:
- I have a 5th Gen iPad that I currently use. It is hard to write with a cheapo stylus because the palm rejection lags on the iPad while using Notability. I have to wear a THICK sock on my right hand to cover my palm and knuckles so they don't touch the screen. The newer smart stylus do not work with my older iPad.
- My current 32 GB iPad needs more space! I had to delete my old notes and store them online, which means I can't use them in Notability. I would like a larger storage so I can keep all my school notes on it.

Budget:
- The cheaper the better.
- I am willing to buy USED, I'm just not sure if a used iPad would be better than the Black Friday deals.
- Because I write so much, a bigger screen would be nice, but I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a PRO since I don't do anything else other than write and study with Notability.
- Storage is important because I like accessing my older school notes. 32 GB is not enough.

Thank you!

Baylin, because you write that "the cheaper is better" and need more storage, I would definitely look at the 128GB 8th gen iPad (2020). It has a larger screen than your present one (10.2" vs 9.7") and obviously a lot more storage. Writing notes on it should be significantly better.

You can often find them on sale for $400.

Thank you so much. I have been using my old iPad and the amount of writing and notes is taking it's toll on my hand, wrist and diy sock gloves.

I'll watch the Black Friday sales and hope to find a good deal.

Just a slight note from my side. Using iPad and Pencil instead of regular pen and notebook would not have positive effect on your hand or wrist. At least it does not work this way for me. I had to tone down how much I color with the Pencil in Procreate because I stared getting issues. Basically I would get numbness and in the same time some slight needles like feeling in my fingers. So really for me using the Pencil and the iPad does not improve the experience of writing on regular notebook.

That being said I did find that using the 2nd generation pencil (and thus iPad Pro or iPad Air 4) has less side effects on my hands than using the 1st generation one.

Thank you for the info.

My 5th gen requires me to lift my wrist off the iPad when writing with the old cheap stylus. I have started using a thick sock to allow me to rest my palm, but I still have issues when the iPad senses the metacarpal-phalangeal joint on my pinky finger through the socks, causing the page to zoom in and out.

I need an iPad that will allow me to use a smart pen so I can stop using my cheapo felt tipped stylus and rest my hand on the screen. I take PowerPoint notes, so I don't write a lot continuously, but rather sporadically. Also, the small screen on my iPad means I am constantly moving my page around to be able to write.

I think the 2020 iPad with 120GB fits the bill.

I take it that the new smart pens will allow me to rest my hand on the iPad when writing notes, is this correct?

Man, I see how it affects you. Yes, you got it right. Both the 1st and 2nd pencil support palm rejection so yes you can rest your hand on the iPad while writing. When you are asking about the 2020 iPad are you asking about the regular 8th gen iPad? I am asking because this iPad has I think slightly bigger screen than the one you have (9.7 vs 10.2 inch I guess) but I am not sure if you will feel the difference too much.
That being said with palm rejection I don't think that the page would move even if your hand is resting on the iPad.

It is the 128 GB 8th Gen (year 2020) that @Broadus recommended. I just started researching it and that seems like it is all I need without the extra price tag or features that I will never use.

I really need the extra storage space and the ability to rest my palm (and pinky finger) when writing to alleviate the stress from lifting my palm/pinky joints off the screen and cutting holes in my old socks. The palm rejection doesn't work well when using those old ball tip stylus.

You would really appreciate palm rejection! It really is a nice feature. Without it honestly, handwriting for me would be difficult and annoying chore on the iPad.

Indeed try this basic iPad because it should work for your case. Only if you have issues, you should think about something else. After all you are not asking for powerhouse machine, you just need an iPad that supports Apple Pencil and thus palm rejection. So great choice!

Have you considered buying a refurbished 6th gen 128GB iPad? Sell your 5th gen iPad to subsidize most of the cost.

Thanks for the idea.

I just looked on eBay. I see prices are at close to $300+ after shipping for the 6th gen. I hope that prices for the 7th and 8th will be close to that price point on Black Friday. If the prices drop for the newer ones, I'll get them. If not, I will get the 6th gen. I'll also sell my 5th gen to help with the cost.

? for a drop in prices.

EDIT: I just looked online and the 7th and 8th are basically the same (just faster cpu for 8th, which I won't need). I'll look into finding a sale on the 128 GB 7th. I saw some past sales for $320ish on some deal sites. I'll be targeting this model since the 8th should hopefully bring the price down.
