So, I purchased an iPhone on launch day. I was reading up on checking for dead pixels on the iPhone screen (i was bored), and sure enough I thought I found one.

It looks similar to pics 8 & 9 in this post:
https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/3936138/

Except I only have 1 black dot, closest to the letter 'P' in "Phone"
I tried rubbing the area around it trying to unstick the pixel, and played the 'pixel fixer video' (the one that flashes red, green, blue, white, black) but to no avail.

I took it to the Genius Bar hoping to get it replaced, but the 'Genius' told me in wasn't a dead pixel but a "bubble" under the glass, which occurred during manufacturing! This made me worry because i knew it was something that couldn't be fixed by me or the genius.

He asked me what I would like to do, I replied I would like a replacement. He said he'd see what he can do. He asked me when i purchased the phone, i told him on launch day, and then told me that my 14 day return policy was up and i'd have to have it sent in for 5 days and would have to use my old cingular phone during that time (they didn't even offer a loaner iPhone!)

I told him i'd prefer not to have it sent in and replaced on the spot, he said he'd ask the manager. (Another apple employee (who i know isn't another manager or the store manager) was overhearing the genius and the manager's conversation, and said that this shouldn't be done. The manager came over and said i'd have to have it sent in and that was all that couldnt be done. I explained that I understood the 14 days were up, but told them that it (the bubble, which i thought was a dead pixel) is difficult to see, and is only visible in certain angles and on a white background (which i rarely look at the home screen, and mainly use safari and, mail, phone, and ipod - all of which have a black or colored toolbar at the bottom where the "bubble" is.) The manager didn't seem to care and was looking off into other parts of the store and just interrupting and saying "Ok, well, these are your options" - she only gave me one!

I asked if there was someone else i could speak to (as i thought she was being rude and not really listening to me, but i didn't tell her that) . She said well I can give you the Customer service number or i could talk to someone higher up. I asked who that would be and she said the store manager, but that she wasn't in today. She said she'd "be helpful and give me the store manger's #" so i could contact her. The manager said she get the store manger's card and left for 15 minutes and came back and didnt explain why she took so long. I asked what the holdup was, she said she had to find the business cards. I looked at the card, and all she did was write the store manager's name! - the card had the store's # and email and that was it!
I was frustrated as this whole process had taken over 1 hour!

(I also have the unfortunate 7xxx series lcd)

So, do you guys have any idea to go about getting a replacement without sending it in? Should i try another Apple Store, or am I just out of luck?

Sorry for for long post, and thnx in advance.

Wow, which store was that? I'll be sure NOT to go to it.

However, since I live about an hour and 30 minutes away from the nearest Apple store, I called and am having mine sent in. They gave me a loaner for free, and based on what the lady said when I talked to her on the phone, will probably just send me a brand new phone.

I just don't get it, yes, my 14 days are up, but the bubble was there before you even sold it to me. That is unacceptable.

It was Emeryville Apple Store. I was thinking of trying my luck at the SF store.
Did you arrange to have your's sent in via customer service/applecare? If I have better luck with them and can (maybe) get them to assure me I'll get a new one, then I might just send it in.
The problem I have with this is, if they don't give me a new one, I'm I liable for any other damages (dead pixels, bad screen, more bubbles, etc.) that applecare might cause?

That is exactly what i was trying to explain to them.
Thanks for your response.

Not to pick at you, but why worry? As you state (if I read it correctly) the bubble doesn't affect your main uses of the iPhone at all- you don't even see it in your normal usage. Why worry about returning a device that doesn't exhibit a problem except "in certain angles and on a white background (which i rarely look at the home screen, and mainly use safari and, mail, phone, and ipod - all of which have a black or colored toolbar at the bottom where the "bubble" is.)"?

Again - if I misread your post, sorry. But if the iPhone works fine with the way you use it, why stress over returning it over a defect that, in your actual usage, you would rarely - if ever - notice?

Thats nice, but the OP has a problem with his new gadget...he should get a replacement. I have the battery problem, and I got 1 replaced, same problem and they said it was "only software"....only problem now is I risk over heating my battery because I never know when its fully charged.

Not arguing that he doesn't have a manufacturing defect- he just seems really stressed over a replacement on the spot for a defect that he admits he wouldn't ever have noticed in his own everyday use. Just trying to provide friendly counsel that, sometimes, sweating the really small details isn't necessarily worthwhile.

i may be worrying to much but on the other hand...

I understand and agree that the bubble is a minor annoyance that doesn't affect my use of it, but i also feel that it shouldn't have been that way to begin with and it made me more frustrated with how the employees handled the situation.

I am also curious, I know with dead pixels that touching the area around it may cause more dead pixels, but since this isn't the case, is it possible that this small bubble may grow or damage the screen. This is what I am concerned about. I've tried searching and looking up info regarding bubbles and particles under the glass but haven't found any helpful information. If someone knows if the bubble can cause problems in the future (or if it won't) let me know. Thanks.

got it replaced! :)

So i took my iphone to the SF Apple Store. I told the genius i think it is a dead pixel or something under the screen. The Genius agreed , and aplogized for the defect it said he would swap it!! I was thrilled, and the whole process of swapping my iPhone took 35 minutes and thats that the genius appeared to still be in training!
So now I have a new flawless iPhone ohh, yea and it has the 5xxx series lcd! :D
