Read in another thread about mkvdts2ac3 that can be used to change mkv dts to ac3 audio without converting the whole file. The mkvdts2ac3.sh is pretty straightforward, but I don't know how to install the prerequisites:
libdca - DTS to WAV decoder
aften - WAV to AC3 encoder

The install guide says to use command line, but I don't know how to do so. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks.

I'm trying to do the same thing,

Found this site which should walk you through it. Step 1 is the conversion of the DTS to AC3, Step 2 he goes on to convert the video so don't worry about that.

http://iamthekiller.net/2009/03/convert-mkv-video-for-the-appletv/

It looks a little tricky...

I'm still new to mac and don't really understand the terminal stuff very well yet so I'm considering just swapping to Bootcamp for it because Windows apparently has some nice GUI apps for exactly this. I'll look into the mac side a bit later and try it when I understand what I'm actually doing. It kinda sucks but he says 13 mins to convert a 2hr audio track so it's not a huge inconvenience.

With the rise in AppleTV and my WDTV and other cheap media players that don't support DTS I'm sure eventually someone will make a shiny GUI with a few tick boxes and a big fat button :p

Edit: OK that idea died. I can't get the .mkv onto the bootcamp partition because the video file is larger than 4gb and won't copy to an external fat32 drive. Doh!

I give up, trying to install aften defeated me. I don't think cmake installed itself properly because either through terminal or GUI it just produced errors relating to 'CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM not set'

So without aften I will just wait until someone makes it easier.

Not that I have successfully done this, but I just read through the instructions on the linked site, and noticed you have to compile aften. ie, you must have xcode installed to run "make" (on your install disks).

This app will extract a dts track from a .mkv and convert it to ac3. You then just need to use a program such as mkvmerge to remux the new audio track back into the .mkv.

trying to find a dts to ac3 converter for mac os x

anyone know of a free program that will do this? The above link saying this app will do this is spam :(

This is my post here on what I did and it worked perfectly for me. Just make sure that you have Xcode installed first before doing anything. Also the command line is in Applications/Utilities it's called terminal run that app.

I was able to install cmake and aften, but the mkvinfo and mkvdts2ac3 zip files do not unzip for me....i get an error about the files...i think that iamthekiller's site is delivering corrupted files now. Any way I can just get somebody's zip files of both of these? I'll be able to do the rest no problem.

nando???
