Hi guys,

Sister has an iPhone 12mini which was already shattered to pieces but she kept insisting on using it, "till it falls apart". Well, that happened now.

Problem: Touchscreen not working anymore, SIRI commands still allow to answer calls.

- Is there any way to look up online what iOS is running on the phone and when the last backup was made?
- Do you think it's worth getting it repaired? I mean it's probably more than £400 from Apple.
- is there any way to get everything onto a new phone? Maybe with iTunes?

She's devastated and regrets not listening to me to back it up constantly and be prepared to move quickly with a new phone sooner than later.

Any tipps are greatly appreciated!

Many thanks!

If the touchscreen is unresponsive, you're pretty much out of luck, as you would have to enter Passcode to sync 12 mini with any computer or transfer data OTA to a new iPhone. If the issue is just a cracked up, non-functioning display, an iPhone 12 mini is worth repairing.

I think the only way to externally look up the installed iOS version and backup status is through another device using the same iCloud account.

It is my attitude that it’s always worth getting it fixed, although perhaps through a trusted third party repair shop (look up reviews) for perhaps around £150 compared to Apple’s ~£240 charge, I don’t live in the UK. Or would swap the display myself using proper tools and iFixit manuals.

It’s theoretically possible to unlock and navigate the iPhone by connecting a keyboard and trackpad*, but that would either require a Lightning to USB adapter (with a powered USB hub to connect both, or connecting one wirelessly), OR using previously connected Bluetooth peripherals (seems unlikely).
*Edit: apparently, it’s not currently possible to connect the Magic Trackpad wirelessly.

This is called a "Life lesson" and they're important. She needs to understand that her actions have consequences, not that "her brother will fix it no matter what she did."

She needs to get a new phone, restore whatever iCloud backup she had (if any), and deal with losing whatever's lost. Then set up iCloud backup on the NEW phone, so that it doesn't happen again.
