So I updated my iPhone XR to iOS 3.2.3 and just realized now that half my contacts are missing , only first noticed because a lot of my message convos no longer had names and were just numbers and then started searching for people and realized a lot of missing from my contacts

my last backup was 3am (after the update) am I screwed ? How can I fix this ?

If you log onto iCloud.com are they all there? If so, sign out of iCloud on your phone and log back in.

After having a similar problem a few years ago, I checked iCloud.com as Molly mentioned, and noticed that some of my contacts were missing. I had to manually add them. Once I did that, I haven’t had problems after updates or restoring from backup. I don’t know what caused the problem outside of a possible iOS bug.

Hope you get it fixed.

Pretty sure just the automatic backups in the cloud, is there no way to look at a previous backup?
If you have sync for contacts turned on they're not in the backup, so no sense to restore it even for testing. Do you have any contacts synced with Gmail/Yahoo/etc.? Double-check accounts under Settings > Accounts&Passwords.

Edit: Btw, any iTunes backup with these contacts?
