Help: Mac will not view some types of mpeg files also recommend good mac usenet group

Hi,

I'm a (very) new to using Macs, and have only had my Powerbook 17" for about 4 or 5 days! (By the way, I love it!)

I'm trying to access some mpegs that were created on PC's and the Mac will not view them.

I have quite a few mpegs which I think were originaly in SupervideoCD format, possible PAL or NTSC but I'm not sure (I'm in the UK but they are of US origin). They work fine on my PC but the only piece of software that will view them on the mac is a piece of software callede MPlayer.

I also have a Sony videocamera which uses an awful format callede MicroMV (unsupported by just about everything) and I convert them to mpeg on my PC using a piece of software called mmv2mpg.zip but the Mac will not recognise this either, I've tried iMovie, Final Cut Pro and iDVD etc.

Any help appreciated.

I usually use VLC for all my video-files but there are some Mpeg that said application won't play... I use mPlayer for those... no problem...

I don't see where your problem with mPlayer is, please give more detail

I was just suprised that Quicktime wouldn't play the VideoCD files and wondered if there was something I was doing wrong.

Also, I really want to be able to use my Mac for video editing the files from my video camera, I can't find anything that will play them.

Hey buddy, I was in the same position as you. I just got my very first iMac, and had trouble viewing porn mpegs. With the recommendation of this forum, I went on to DIVX.com and DLed their mac codecs. After installation all my mpegs worked perfectly!

Glad your problem is solved, but for reference:

I have quite a few mpegs which I think were originaly in SupervideoCD format...

They probably were in SVCD format, and that means they're not actually MPEG1 files, but MPEG2. QuickTime recognizes and plays MPEG1 files just fine (better than almost anything I've used, in fact), but you need to buy a special MPEG2 playback plugin from Apple to watch MPEG2s.

MPlayer does do MPEG2, but VLC is a whole lot smoother, and plays them just fine as well.

Incidentally, you'll occasionally get a badly corrupt MPEG1 file that the freeware VCDGear application can fix. Works wonders. But if QT won't play it, it's probably not really MPEG1.
