help! macbook keeps logging off

Hi, when I try to log in, it shows desktop then it automatically logs off to the login screen. The one time it actually stayed on, the left click doesn't work. Before this started, my left click wasn't working so I restarted and now it will keep logging me out. My bootcamp partition works normally.

Could anyone help me? Thanks!

I am new to OSX but I would suggest logging into safe mode. Might help you diagnose the problem:

hmmm - that's a bit of a mystery.

first, go to system preferences/login options (the little house down bottom of pane - you may then need to click on padlock ad enter your admin password)
ensure that 'automatic login' is selected so that it takes you straight to your desktop upon start up.

then if that don't work (which it should):

you could try repairing disk permissions and then reset 'pram' upon restart

applications/disk utility/select 'Macintosh HD' then 'repair permissions'

upon restart hold down option + command + p + r until you here the 'chime' 3 or 4 times then release all keys and allow to start normally

I tried both of your ideas, but it still doesn't work. It reboot's right after it shows desktop picture. I guess I'm going to reformat my air.

try this first

open Terminal

copy and paste one line at a time hit enter once completed then restart
(you'll have to enter admin password after first command)

sudo chown root:admin /

sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel

sudo kextcache -system-caches

I can't go terminal, it reboots right at desktop background. 1 time, it didn't reboot at all, but everytime I opened something, the dock disappeared and reappeared. I've decided to just use my bootcamp side, and reformat my laptop when this semester ends (2 months left).

startup from your install dvd/usb stick - takes a while (then after you select language) you'll see the install pane.
up in the top menu click on 'utilities' and select 'disk utility'

repair permissions from there then restart as per normal from your HDD

that may fix it for you

definitely something crazy going on there …
