It’s really going to come down to what you plan to do for monitors. Still the best game in town if you want a desktop that can quietly and affordably power up to 3 4K monitors but has no good path to 5K or above. If it’s brand new and you can verify build date and it’s at least a 6 core model, it’s not a bad price. I’d slap AppleCare on it if possible and you should be good with it until Apple has a comparable Apple Silicon Mini or Half Pro. I intend to stay in the 6,1 until the then and have already decided that I’ll replace my current one with another 6,1 if the GPU dies, which is a problem with any built more than 2 years ago.

The 6-core D500 model is a great Mac. The price is pretty good. I found a brand new one for $1500 on clearance at a local university book store in May. Then added AppleCare+. Then I found a brand new 8-core D700 model marked down to $1899 at Micro Center the next month so I took the D500 unit to my Mom's so she can use it. I'd still buy one now if I was looking for a Mac desktop. I don't think the expense of the 7,1 makes much sense with the Apple Silicon version coming, unless you really need the capability. I think they're still making movies and commercials with the 6,1 though. It can do a lot.
