I have a Core Duo MBP. I have had it since ~June 2006. It has been seemingly getting slower and slower to boot up, so after searching here, I inserted the Install CD and ran the disk utility to check and repair permissions. it had a few that were wrong, and they were all corrected and verified.
That was a week ago.
Yesterday, the MBP stopped booting altogether.
Symptoms:
Power it on, the Apple comes up, then the "Startting MAC OS X..." dialog box with the scroll bar indicator comes up. It gets all the way to the right hand end of the field, which normally then takes me right to the login screen. However, now, it gets to the end of the "Starting MAC OS X..." screen and just sits there. I have timed it, and it sits there for more than 10 minutes. Yes, minutes - not seconds. I have power cycled it several times, and the same thing happens every time.
I also have a new copy of Prosoft's Drive Genuis, which I have also booted from. I have run every utility from that program as well - repair, rebuild, scan, integrity check, even disk defragmenter. Everything comes out OK.
My thought is that something in the boot sequence is hosed, as the hard drive seems to be properly communicating.
A buddy of mine believe there is some key sequence that you can use during power up/boot up to get rid of the "Starting MAC OS X..." window and have the system actually display the Linux boot sequence so I can try to debug what it is failing on.
Any help would be appreciated.
