I think the husband has seen someone with a iPad Pro at work, and he loved the ability to write directly on the iPad.

However how far does this ability go? Can you use the Apple Pencil in ANY text field, or is it limited?

As a family we are not the best to use iPads at their full potential so I'm not sure its the best idea, but would the basic iPad suffice? The Pro isnt an option for sure, our Mac doesnt get used much 🤣

You can scribble on any modern iPad and for some this really works well. iPads come with a two week no questions asked return policy, see if your family likes it.

I think the midrange models, which cost about $500, are the best to choose. The premium expensive models don’t do a lot more and they don’t have the ultra-fast performance that Apple promises.

I like the pencil feature. The handwriting recognition works very well, once you learn it. It was frustrating at first, but it quickly improved for me. The iPad comes with an app called FreeForm which is great for handwriting and drawing.

Yes, the basic works fine for that. If you’re in the US, you can find it on sale nowadays for ~$350 ($100 discount off $449 MSRP).

With new iPads being announced next week, you might hold off on your decision until then. From your description, an iPad Pro might be overkill, but an iPad Air with a new pencil might work out. It may come down to which screens they put on each model and whether you husband watches a lot of video (pro) or not so much (air).
