help me choose a graphics card

Running a 2008 2.8 8 core machine. Recent upgrades include 240GB SSD for boot, 32GB Ram. Currently running 10.6, but planning to move to Maverick if I can track down an answer on whether my rocketraid 622 SATA card will be supported.

Currently has the 2600 graphics card with 256mb memory running two DVI displays. I have read that the 2008 machines can be a little bit of PITA. The 5xx series cards will have too many heat issues, and it will clock down 6xxx, 7xxx Radeon as well as 6xx and 7xx nvidia cards.

My budget is 200. I am not concerned with boot screen, when booting to boot camp I will just change the boot disk. I do not really game, but I use iPhoto with large cr2 files and iMovie with different 1280HD cameras.

So far what I have seen is a hacked 5770 (the apple branded on is still around 250) or the PC version 650/660. What suggestions

I flashed my own 680 but that's out of your price range. For two customers since I have replaced stock cards from this seller with used EFI models.

Both arrived pristine with new power cables and are working fine.

Took 10-12 days to arrive to the UK.

If you can put up with the lack of boot screen most of the Nvidia kepler cards work out the box. 650ti boost is about 200

I have a MVC flashed Gigabyte GTX570 that is currently on for sale section of this forum. It's in your price range and has a boot screen. PM if interested.

Ironically I saw some of his cards but was learly as they were all older models that did not look like they could keep up with 6xx series.

some of the info in this post has me leery of the 570 in a 2008 because of the reported heat issues and power draw killing the power supply.

I ran this card in a 2008 3,1 Mac Pro. I pulled it and replaced it with the 5770 from my 5,1 before I sold it. MVC Clocked the card up slightly after running tests on his setup. It was fast, cool running and had no power issues.

I bought my son's 650Ti as new (other) on ebay and saved over 40% off, still had the years warranty. I would be surprised if you couldn't get a 650Ti Boost within your budget.

The 660 I'm not sure whether it draws too much power or not, think it draws a lot more than the Boost so I will defer to the experts around here lol.

Yes, single DVI. But dual outputs - DVI and Display Port.

Thank you for the information. At this point I am looking for a card with dual DVI out as I am using monitors that use DVI, and do not want to spend the extra money for an adapter.
