Hi,

I am planning to buy an iPhone for my partner. She has a Huawei now and I am wondering what could be a good iPhone to buy for her right now. She doesn't care about the new cameras, islands and new features. I know she likes the design of iPhone 11 Pro but I am wondering if it could last more than 2-3 years in terms of performance? My options right now are either iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 12.

Which one could be better?

Yep, evangelizing is rarely (never?) a good idea, especially when it comes to phones and religion. 😉

Besides, Apple users already have a reputation for being snooty/holier-than-thou — no need to make it worse.

*If* she wants a new phone and *if* she wants your advice, ask her what she cares about. *Support* and supply her with information so she can make a choice that’s right for her, even if it’s one you wouldn’t ever make.

To be honest I ‘converted’ my girlfriend when I gave her iPhone SE2 as bday gift. She would never consider going back to Droid - to be fair her previous phones work or personal were budget Samsung pieces of garbage

What Huawei phone does she have right now? Huawei phones in the recent years, especially their flagships, look gorgeous.

The iPhone 11 Pro is a great phone, and still is. It will be fine for 2 to 3 years more. Apple has such a huge performance headroom right now that anything form XR and above are running iOS16 just fine. The 11 Pro also have 4GB of RAM, so there's plenty of headroom as now Apple still supports devices with 2GB of RAM (iPhone 8).

Personally, I would prefer the 11 Pro than the 12. The only downside of the 11 Pro is that she might feel it a bit "small" screen-wise compared to her Android (assuming she at least have an Android with 6.1" screen or larger). If you want, get her the 13 instead of the 12.

Converting Android user to iPhone is easy. Simply have them take videos straight from instagram or snapchat app on Android, and do the same on iPhone. The quality difference is night and day.

Haha yes she knows I'm gonna buy an iPhone for her. She already has an iPad and Mac so she is in the ecosystem. But I don't want to buy her the newest model. Just trying to see if she is gonna like it or not.

Biggest reason to convert to iOS — two words: blue bubbles 🙂

Seriously, I would choose the 11 Pro over the 12 even though I think the body design of the 12 is better. The 11 Pro will give you an extra lens and it might be an easier transition overall. Plus, by this time next year she will want a Pro Max 😉

The whole ecosystem argument is the best one for someone who has other Apple devices. I have been using iPads and MacBooks since 2012 but have always had Samsung phones. Every time I was due for an upgrade I would go into Best Buy intending to give the iPhone a try but would walk out with the newest Samsung instead. This time it was easier because I always upgrade in October when the new Notes came out and Samsung dropped that line. I have no regrets at all and have quickly come to really like this phone. my favorite thing is how I can do something on my phone and then access it on my other Apple devices. Texting is awesome. I was using Verizon’s crappy text program on all of my devices when I had my Notes and it sort of worked. And I tried using T-Mobile’s web based text that kind of worked. Nothing even comes close to how well Apple does it. And don’t even get me started on how cool the Apple Watch is.

I just wish that apple didn’t rely so heavily on stuff with green backgrounds and white text. It makes it tough on us visually impaired folks.

I am pretty sure that it is iPhone for me from now on. Fantastic phone and everything is just so well done.

As much as I like the 11 pro I’d get the 12. It’s will have a year extra support , 5g if that matters to you, bigger and better screen. Or search for some deals on 12 or 13 pro. Black Friday is coming so you might find something. Good luck

The year extra of support is an assumption. Apple's pattern of hardware support has been inconsistent lately, as they seem to be willing to ditch 2 generations at once. Since OP indicated the expected use of just 2 to 3 years, i believe the 11 Pro will still be supported in 2 to 3 years.

I'd go for the 12. Three reasons:
  1. 5G Support
  2. Magsafe charging
  3. Probably be supported longer than the 11

The best phone for her is the phone she wants.

Exactly that. I personally would be annoyed if someone buys a phone for me I didn't want.
Had the discussion with an ex employer a few years ago.

That said, things that are pro apple in my view:
1. Significantly longer software support leads to longer useful device life and thus the TCO is much more competitive than when just comparing the acquisition cost.
2. Higher integration means you can get smaller phones with the same specs
3. iOS is significantly more stable and user friendly than Android (not hard to accomplish), leading to less frustration when using the device. Also, less hours of maintenance per usage duration.
4. Integration with iTunes can replace an iPod Classic (or similar). Useful especially when driving, I never had that smooth integration with any Android device.

But of course, there are cons as well.

If she is already in the ecosystem, then you don't need to sell it as it has sold itself. Her having the iPhone enables her to send and receive texts and calls on all her devices. That by itself is gold.

Agree to all those points.
My company provides me with a S9.
All my contact info is pointed to my personal iPhone.

Yea that's the good and bad thing about Android. So many different choices. As long as an iPhone still supports a fairly current iOS and the cellular voice tech still exists, you should be good. But Androids can be cheap $50 to like $1500

She would like an iPhone but she is the type of person that wouldn’t change her phone if is still turning on haha. And her huawei p9 lite is showing its age.
Thanks for the answers! I think I’ll go with the 12. The screen size is important for her so iPhone 12 would be a good choice.

That's my dad. He finally got another feature flip phone when his current one broke at the hinge. And I think he may have ased it for a bit before replacing it
