iPad Help me decide!

So here's my "dilemma" that I am trying to decide between.

Let me know your honest, non-judgemental (please) opinions, and thank you in advance!

My 6th gen iPad is going to my son shortly to replace his long in the tooth 4th gen iPad.

For roughly the same price, I can do one of three options:

1. Get a 128 GB 7th gen iPad wifi on sale, and, for kicks, a refurbished 64GB wifi iPad Air 2. Why both? I recently found an old apple smart case for my old iPad Air 2, and suddenly wanted to pick up one for cheap.
2. Get an 11" iPad Pro 64GB wifi from a friend, only a few months old, mint condition, with a case and Apple Pencil.
3. Get a refurb 10.5" IPP. My least favorite of the 3 options as I am worried about the touch disease/white spot issues I had with my 12.9" 2nd gen iPad Pro that I had until I sold it last year.

Which option? I do light work and heavy browsing, reading, some blogging, and some photo editing for my blog about cats.

You gotta go option 2 all the other iPad have like 2GB RAM only and at least with the Apple Pencil you can create your own backgrounds or art for your Blog. Just make sure it’s the Apple Pencil 2 and compatible with the iPad Pro 11”

Option #2 is probably the most practical unless you prefer to have a backup iPad.

I would go option 2 - can't really go wrong there. I'd rather have the better iPad than 2 that are outdated. I realize the 7th gen is a new pad, and plenty good enough for most usage, but it IS an already 2yo processor going forward, and you're buying an even older device to go along with it as well.

My only hesitation is the fact that the iPad Pro is about to be updated, if you believe the rumors.

Even if it is, you're still getting a better device than the others, and likely a much better price than you'll get buying a new pro.

Mind, I just got an iPad 7 LTE for my dad. It's more than fast enough for his usage (Facebook, YouTube and forums) plus he can be rough on his things so the thicker profile seems like it'll be less fragile for him.

Mind, I just got an iPad 7 LTE for my dad. It's more than fast enough for his usage (Facebook, YouTube and forums) plus he can be rough on his things so the thicker profile seems like it'll be less fragile for him.

I was gonna say 3, but I wasn't positive about that. And yeah for most people that iPad is a great buy for sure. I just think there's more longevity with the pro.

With storage its a question of how much media you need immediately to hand, and whether you subscribe to i cloud drive, with the latter you’re much freeer to make do with small storage sizes. Wouldn’t worry about the apple pencil unless you want to do creative things.

Just to update everyone, I went with......an alternate option, call it.....option 4?

For now I just went with a 128gb iPad 7 to "tide me over" until I see what is released this year, iPad-wise. I already had a Smart Keyboard for it, so between that and my beloved 2015 MacBook Pro, I'm all set for now. The iPad Air 2 was a fleeting feeling that came and went.

Should the 2020 iPad Pro be as nice as the rumors suggest, I might just upgrade to that and give the iPad 7 to my girlfriend to replace her own iPad Air 2, which I get the feeling might not (or might, it's kind of on the cusp) get the new iPad OS update.

The iPad 7 really is a pretty nice tablet. Certainly nicer than the Amazon Fires. The basic iPads are my go-to for family members who just want a tablet for browsing, email, shopping, social media, video streaming and casual games.

Thanks! I actually have a 2017 Fire HD 10 that I got as a gift and......I totally agree with you. The fire is good for what it is, a basic consumption device locked into Amazon's world as has been discussed at length, but it doesn't hold a candle to the overall iPad experience, nor was it ever meant to. As has also been discussed, lack of google play/apps cripples it needlessly. Yes you can hack it, but....meh. One thing I did discover was that my 2017 model HD 10 is already not getting the most recent version of their FireOS. My girlfriend's iPad Air 2 is still receiving updates! That kind of crap right there is why I'll never leave the Apple ecosystem.

Well, I spoke too soon. I have what appears to be my first defective apple device. I was unable to restore this from a previous iPad backup, as it got stuck at the point where it needed to download the latest iPad OS.

Getting this error when trying on my iMac:

The iPad software update server could not be contacted. You do not have permission to access the requested resource.

Interestingly enough, I saw a post with similar error trying to update a Mini 4 from iOS 9 to 13. That's quite possibly server side.
