Help me downgrade from 10.10 Yosemite

I have downloaded the DP2 for Yosemite 10.10. I am wanting to revert back to Mavericks but don't really know how. I was too eager when downloading
Yosemite and did not set up a partition or backup on mavericks. I have made a backup on Yosemite and I am wondering if my Yosemite backup would transfer if I were to revert back to Mavericks. Also I need to know how to go back to Mavericks. Thanks
 
how do I make the usb install. I have downloaded the mavericks install on my other computer but it won't work when I try opening it on my mac that I want reset
 
Thats why u don't install developer preview without being a developer

here

get 8gb usb, format it as os x extended journaled and call it Untitled
download mavericks from App Store

Run this in terminal and wait about 20 minutes:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction

reboot into the installer and install os x

your personal data will not be deleted if you install mavericks on top of yosemite

By rebooting into installer you mean holding down command +r on boot up? Correct? Once I do this where do I go from here?
 
You can't install Mavericks on top of Yosemite.

You need to wipe your whole internal disk to be able to install Mavericks.

So :

- download Mavericks
- create a 8 GB USB installer using DiskMaker X (this is the easiest way)

- restart and hold down the Option key, select the USB stick and boot up from it
- use Disk Utility to erase the whole disc (not the Macintosh HD partition only)

- install Mavericks

Do I clear the disk before or after the restart and hold option key?
 
Wow, it's like people are not reading or intentionally being rude. Anyway, dear OP, here is what you need to know. In order to revert back to Mavericks you have to wipe out the entire disk, i.e. you loose all data on it, that contains Yosemite. You cannot restore the data, automatically, from the Yosemite backup (The Yosemite backup does not transfer).

That's bad news. You would have to manually go into the backup and find your files and folders that are important, hopping you know how to identify all the system/preference files etc that you'd need, that are usually hidden away in the library folder. In other words, you have your work cut out for you. At this point you might be better off just staying on Yosemite, especially since new and improved DPs will typically be coming out every 2-3 weeks.

In short, you can downgrade but it will be a PITA.

I understand why people do this but I don't understand why people do this with no way of rolling back. I intend to upgrade my main system to Yosemite when Apple gives us the public beta but I will do a Time Machine backup right before I upgrade so I have something to roll back to immediately (which I'm hoping I will never need to do).

I would stick with Yosemite for now. The issues you're finding will likely be resolved in beta versions not too far away. Plus, Apple even say that if you're wanting to roll back from a beta you may as well just wait for public release instead of trying to downgrade.
 
What I always do is CC Cloner my disk drive, and then proceed.

If it goes weird, which it did, boot up (unfortunately disk wasn't bootable, but had another external with 10.8 bootable) and transferred contents from backup to SSD on MacBook Air.

Good to go !

I suspect they just plain did not know any better or understand the implications of running a beta OS like this. Then they come here looking for help after realizing they make a HUGE mistake and get condescending comments instead of help. I mean if people don't want to help, just scroll on by.

(I don't mean to imply your comment meets this description because it does not. :))
 
You can just use the Internet Recovery built into your Mac.
You press option-command-R as it's starting up and it'll default to its original OS (it was Mountain Lion in my case).
From there you can upgrade to Mavericks no problem (it's free)

Sorry, SOL. You best chance is to wipe, reinstall Mavericks, and try to grab your documents from the time machine through migration assistant. DON'T transfer computer settings, just documents.


Hopefully this will be a lesson learned. I have an external USB 3.0 drive enclosure with a 240GB SSD that I use for developer previews. I never touch my internal drive for DPs. EVER. Maybe I'm a little strict, but I can get "back home" simply by holding down the power button till the computer turns off. Pull the USB cord, and in a few seconds be back in the public version of OS X with little worries.

Oh, and WTF? No Backups? C'mon man this is computing 101. Buy a cheap external USB drive, plug into Mac, click "yes" to Time Machine Backup. Not rocket science...

Why is so limited.
If you download it, which apple allows you to, then you should hAVE A OPTION to clearly save it to a folder.


Its been like the 4th time downloading it now. this is crazy !!!

Not really sure what you are talking about? Are you talking about the Mavericks installer? If you are after you dl it if you just cancel at the install prompt it just sits in your applications folder and you can do whatever you want from there.

If you're talking about Yosemite, Apple in fact does not provide a way for non-developers to download and install the Developer Preview. The only way to get it as a non-developer is through a third-party site...
