Stuck in the middle with you
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get rid of the white background on my avatar. I keep going into photoshop and erasing it, but when I use the "save for web" feature it always comes back, JPEG or GIF. How do I get rid of it? and if any of yall are really bored, you could do it for me....

thanks! do you mind filling me in on how you did it though, I feel like it's something I should know.

I'm not exactly sure how he did it, but here's a screen shot of how I did it.

I just deleted the background, deleted the background layer, and choose to save as a gif. Jpg doesn't support transparency (or at least I think it doesn't) I didn't use the Save For Web thing. I don't understand its advantage, at least with gifs.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: yes... I'm sorry to say that this was done on windows. I don't have a mac at school. In the future, for everybody's safety, I will walk over to the library and take a screen shot from my schools lone G5 :) ...

It has to be saved as a GIF file with transparency checked or it wont work. You cant do it as a JPGs. JPGs are never transparent.

PNG files support transparency [on real web browsers] too, by the way. ;)

Ooh, I'm a recent png convert. It seems as though you can get much better quality with much smaller filesizes as well, which is most useful for MR avatars. :)

absolutely! it handles the transparency without the color restrictions, compression, and other GIF annoyances. .gif is nice but sometimes a less lossy format is a must. :) (necessity depends on the image of course)

Yes! Have you noticed my nice clear skin? I was a little congested before in .gif form. :p

transparent gifs

If you can change your avator to a gif file then the site below will help you change your bg to trasnparent

Click on file - upload file
Click on - add transparency
Click on edit and put curser on area you wish to be
Hope this works - it will only work on gifs:p
