My technology teacher thinks that with great tinkering, the iPhone can run on Verizon (CDMA) without a Sim Card at all. How do I prove him wrong? (I know, for a fact, that GSM phones cannot operate on CDMA networks, but I need a better explanation.

tell your teacher to prove it. to do it he will need to replace the antenna and SGOLD2 Chip in the iphone with a CDMA CHip redo a bunch of circuitry and then reprogram the firmware and the iphone OS. doesn't seem feasible to me? IF he is saying that it is possible it is on paper, but not practical
well first you have to ask him to define what he means by "great tinkering". then you need to ask him what he thinks needs to be done to make an iphone run on verizon.
what is need is as pointed out above, replacing circuitry and reprogramming the interfaces, both of which are something that needs both specialized skills and tools, and knowing what needs to be done. further, the circuitry is pretty integrated so i'm not sure if the parts needed are readily available. making such parts would cost a lot. further, to get connected to verizon networks needs verizons' approval for the device. the cost for that is in millions of $$$.
ok, the next step is to get a dictionary with your teacher and look up formal definition for tinkering, likely to be something like this: "to tinker: to repair, adjust, or work with something in an unskilled or experimental manner : <always tinkering with his car>"
now you can say: "see, tinkering really isn't sufficient to make iphone run on verizon".
If you are in highschool, I guess you don't have a choice. But if you are in college, I suggest transferring to another college.
