I have what is probably a very simple question concerning the Mac mini. I have been doing a bit of research here and am considering purchasing one for photo editing, and I keep reading that a similarly specced Macbook Pro will be much faster. My question is why would that be? Thanks for any answers.

Since the Mac mini (Mm) uses dual core i5 or i7 CPUs, it can be compared to the 13" MacBook Pro (MBP), which also uses dual core i5 and i7 CPUs.
If both Macs are similar specced, both Macs will be the same speed.

Where have you read that statement anyway? If that statement included the 15" and 17" MBPs, then of course the 15" and 17" MBPs would be faster, due to their quad core CPUs and dedicated GPUs.

You should also make sure where ever you read this that they weren't comparing the 2012 MBPs to the current Mac Mini as Ivy Bridge CPUs are obviously a bit faster than there predecessors.
