Once you jailbreak it you never have to do it again as long as you don't update /restore the firmware of the iPhone. So yes, it is a one time process. If you update/restore with Apple's firmware your iPhone will be relocked/deactivated/unjailbroken, and you have to wait for the new tools from the dev team to be updated to work with the new firmware.

Technically speaking jailbreaking and unlocking are two separate things. Jailbreaking means you have complete control over the phone including root access. Jailbreaking also breaks the security chain at its lowest levels allowing you to do/run just about anything you want. Unlocking refers to being able to use your phone with any carrier. At a higher level, jailbreaking is the first step towards unlocking because obviously you need to completely control the phone to start playing with the baseband (the part the locks the phone to a carrier).

thanks for the help so far and let me start by saying i cant take full
credit for my post, that is a line from a song of the band "blood hound gang".
but it describes me to the T

so if my phone is jailbroken, i dont need to worry about this again so i just need to update the firmware ? how? and can i jump from 1.1.4 to 3.0 ? or must i go through them all?

when do i unlock it?

maybe i should buy a nokia! its much easier ;-)

My advice would be this:

- update the phone now, via itunes, to 3.0 (unless you are already unlocked and using a non-official carrier, in which case wait a few days)

- the unlock software for the first gen iphone on v3.0 will be released in the next few days, and when it is this forum will be swamped with posts from people about their experiences with it.

- when most people are reporting that it works fine, that's your time to download it and jailbreak/unlock your phone, whatever you want to do
