I have gotten iphone 3gs, but it was stuck in the boot loop. I got it into recovery mode at the moment. My goal is to unlock this iphone or at least restore it to to current ios version. I have no idea which ios version or firmware or baseband this phone is running.

Can someone provide step by step instructions for me to restore and hopefully unlock this iphone without bricking it?

Thank You.

I clicked restore and itunes automatically picked 4.3.5 for me. It is currently being downloaded. So I guess I'll just let itunes restore my iphone to that os version, then will see what firmware I end up running and go from there.

So what should I do? I have no idea which firmware or baseband this phone is running? Any help????

The first thing you needed to do was that. You can't do anything fi you don't have any information regarding the device. A loop-start isn't going to help you. Might as well do it now.

Once it's done restoring I'll see what firemware and such this phone is running and will go from there. Thanks.

Did you buy this used or is it a new 3GS from ATT?

It's possible to unlock from ATT now as long as the phone is no longer under contract which it might be if you bought it used.

No it was bought used on craigslist. I'm getting could not be restored 3194 error.

Error 1600 are always USB related. After having proded and poked through it, try another USB port or rebooting your Mac.

Well after trying a different usb port, now I'm getting a 1601 error instead of 1600.

I think there was an attempt to unlock or restore this iphone with a custom ipsw and now it is bricked. I'll trying restoring it at home on my mac. If that does not work I'll try restoring using different custom ipsw's, hopefully one of them will work.

Do not try to use custom .ipsw since these are the issue at the moment. To have an iPhone accept a custom .ipsw we need to create and lay some ground work via iPhone Dev Team tools.

For now, just restore to a stock image. Also, try with another computer. This usually fixes 160x errors.

Alright so i was able to restore to stock 5.1.1 via iTunes. Then I did a custom ipsw and got cydia installed and passed the activation screen. Howerver I came to learn that I got 05.16.05 baseband and my serial is 85148. So I can't downgrade to ipad's baseband meaning I can't use ultrasn0w to unlock this 3gs. Is there any way around this or am I stuck with an unlockable iPhone? Thanks.

next time just hook it up to redsnow, even when in a boot loop it will show the basic info on the phone; current iOS version and current BB.

Just upgrading to stock will always get you stuck on the latest BB, which in this case is unlockable and not eligible for the iPad BB.

16XX error are related to custom IPSW's, you need to restore in DFU or pwned-DFU or your host file is not set to apple but to cydia, probably that was the case as you got the 3194 error before.

Indeed just sell this 1 and get an factory unlocked 1 for a bit more $ but less hassle.
