Help - Mojave 10.14.5

Hi,

I have a late 2013 iMac (24 GB RAM and 4GB graphics) and until I installed the latest Mojave update, everything was running fine. After installing the update, my system's become erratic, "laggy" and the mouse pointer freezes then jumps every few seconds! I can't get any work done and just switching from one application to another has become nightmare.

Has anybody else experienced this? Is there any way to fix it? Is it a hardware (or keyboard/mouse) problem or has Mojave just destroyed my iMac??

What do you have — mechanical hard drive, solid state drive or fusion?

What kind of backup do you have?

If you have a Fusion or Solid State Drive, download the Combo Updater and run it and see if that improves things.

Ok. I see you have the problem fixed. This is great. I only do Combo Updaters anymore.

A common issue with HS and Mojave installs is that paths can become corrupted. If any alias icons are generic instead of looking like they should, you are showing the symptom. Fortunately, a Safe Boot fixes this right up and resets the caches to default. In the pre-OS X days, this was called Rebuild the Desktop and was done the same way:

Shut down. Boot while holding the Shift key. Log into your User Account when prompted. Wait till your desktop icons have finished rebuilding. Restart normally. You're done. This takes a lot longer than a standard boot so be patient.

I've solved a number of little problems on my clients' and my machines this way over the last couple years. Often enough that I now recommend it after every OS upgrade and update with 10.13 and 10.14.

Ancient Mac owners like I did this a lot in the 1980s—we had to. Then once a year or so. Then we forgot about it completely till someone asked how to fix generic icons.
