First I need to clarify that there is no disc in there now (there was never a disc stuck in the drive)
I try to feed the superdrive a disc (cd or dvd) and it won't "pull" the disc in like it used to. I give it plenty of time and nothing happens. If I try to "force" the disc in nothing happens either, it will almost go in all the way but never fully. The eject button will make the sound and even push the disc out if I have it resting in the slot, but I can't get the Macbook to accept a disc (pull) it in.
Is there any software utility I can run to do some diagnostics on the drive, or possibly reset the position of the mechanical parts within the drive? I would rather not send it to Apple, because it will probably cost a lot of money, and I don't have Applecare.
