so i put on the slideshow desktop thing to run in the background, i realized it was extremely lame, so i turned off the change picture box and jkust set it to a normal desktop background but it keeps switching the pictures every 5 seconds and i cant turn it off, wtf?

I'm assuming you unchecked the box. In case you didn't, right click on your desktop (anywhere where there isn't an application) and choose

"Change desktop background" It will be there at the bottom.

If you did all this, then how about a simple restart? Sometimes this will fix a lot.

If a restart doesn't work, try making a copy of com.apple.desktop.plist located in ~/Library/Preferences and paste it somewhere else (i.e. home folder). Then delete the original in the Pref. folder and see if that works. You may have to logout out after deleting it for the changes to take effect. If that doesn't work or if it messes up your computer any, just replace the .plist file with the copy you made.
