Help, need details - how can I have a regular data plan?

I am getting a 2g phone for my 75 year old dad for fathers day - is there a mod to let me have him use it with his existing data plan, and not an iphone plan? We are with ATT - he just uses so little data!

ETA: I still dont understand how i can use my ATT SIM with standard data plan with an unlocked phone, how do I bypass the itunes activation?

thanks! at least i know what to search for, i just got a 2g phone that is jail broken, and i thought unlocked, but it still made me activate with itunes and upgrade my data - will see what i can figure out with my dads...
