Dear All,

I have a mid 2013 Macbook air at the moment (256 GB SSD).
  • 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5

  • 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

This laptop serves my purpose beautifully. At any point of time i have 2-3 windows with 6-7 tabs each opened along with 3-4 excel files and 3-4 PDF's.
It basically solves my purpose just perfectly.

However I'v want to change my computer to a newer model and here are the options :
1. 12 -inch Macbook 256GB, 8 GB Ram and 1.2GHz dual-core 7th-generation Intel Core m3 processor
2. 12 -inch Macbook 256GB, 8 GB Ram and 1.3GHz dual-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz

If I have to then ill consider the following 2 models of Macbook Pro. (However this is my last option as I dont want to spend too much and I like the looks of the new Macbook A lot followed by the macbook pro with touch bar.
  1. Macbook Pro 13
    • 2.3GHz dual-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor
    • 8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
    • 256GB SSD storage1
  2. Macbook Pro 13 (with touchbar)
    • 3.1GHz dual-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor
    • Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
    • 8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
    • 256GB SSD storage1

PS: Im a business man and have a medium amount of travel.

Please advise.

You think the 2017 Macbook (with m3 or i5) will suffice this kind of load ? Not sure as everyone is quite skeptical about it.

I'd get the macbook pro without the touchbar.. better battery life and does the job! i think the macbooks are mainly for emailing and light web browsing.. they have no fan so expect them to heat up a lot

The M3 MB is more than enough. We are not talking about load here. U r using basically the idle process with email and excel.
Im doing 3D CAD on a 2016 MB with and without VM. So everyone who says u just can do light web browsing has never used one.

It doesn't get warmer than a MBP or Air

What about the 128GB MBP (2017) with an external HD for my multimedia.
Or is that too less ? Any idea how much storage the system software needs ?

Maximum load id be putting on it would be just to view files on AUTOcad. Apart from my heavy* browsing, emails and excels.

SSD's usually move slower after having 70% of their storage capacity filled up. I think the OS takes up 30 GBs so you'd have 90. Would be difficult to manage 128 but it can be done!

If you can afford the weight of MBP 13, just get that, otherwise MB12 fine.

MBP13 ntb is faster that any MB12, and the display with P3 and bigger is more comfort that MB12, battery run longer, also the price is reasonable and more reliability that TouchBar.

Im designing with AutoCAD 2D, sketchup and Catia V5 under Win10. So viewing Autocad should be fine;)

Get the entry level MacBook. It will be fine for your needs. The upgraded i5/i7 has absolutely minimal benefit and IMO is only justifiable if you need more than 256 GB of storage (where you then must get the i5.) For your described usage, you will probably greatly appreciate the portability of the MacBook over the MacBook Pro, and will be able to justify the tradeoffs based on this.

Further, if you purchase the base model MacBook, you should be able to find it for at least $100-200 off in a sale (base models seem to go on sale more often than upgraded models, and the i5/8/256 model never goes on sale because IIRC it is a BTO.)

Really?

If your current air is song ok , I’d go with the 2017 MacBook as you travel for business The portability is insane (size weight battery life). It is basically the same foot print as the iPad Air with the keyboard case but with way more functionality. I would opt for the higher ram. I originally bought the 8 g and traded for the 16g. Fewer spinning balls. I would not spend the money on the additional processor speed. Very little difference for the money.
