Circled in yellow:

So I am wondering what would be the best approach to editing (blacking out) or cropping this video in order to make it actually watchable. The bottom left corner Festival ID redraws itself every 9 seconds and is constantly moving. The gear wheel is spinning and the words in the logo are bobbing back and forth as it they are floating on a boat. Basically this logo is in an extremely distracting non-stop loop for over 60 minutes.

The top right logos do a small animation every 20 to 30 seconds, which I would normally feel is very annoying, but the bottom left logo created the world record for these dumb ideas.

Anyway, I'd rather not re-encode since the video is already in h264 video, but may not be an option.

I know I could crop out the bottom and re-encode with handbrake but does anyone have another idea. I would I go about blacking out the logos? FCP, could iMovie do that?

Any input would be appreciated :)

Can you be more specific about who performed, where, when?

It's Chris Cornell from SoundGarden, playing mostly acoustic at a Rock Festival in Santiago Chile in 2011.

All the versions that I have seen online are non-commercial bootleg releases, ie they are not giving Chris, his record label, the concert promoters or the TV station the money that they make from the sales of the DVD.

Chances are that the bootleggers are using the same 720p source file that I have.

I'm surprised: most telecasts of live musical performances (at least in the USA) are delayed until after the DVD/BR release for obvious reasons...

Where did you capture the telecast?

cropping out moving logos will be very time consuming and the patch will move, which will also be visually disturbing..

Is this the Maquinaria Festival¿

UPDATE: Oh yeah, that is the logo on the lower left...

I have to disagree with you there, most live telecast in the US are never sold on DVD, Blu-Ray or in downloadable format, or at least one that I know of.... Haven't checked out every avenue of online sales, but that underlines my point, it's easy to miss when you don't see other options...l

HBO is the exception not the rule, when you consider how many Austin City Limits ( and the like ) episodes are televised and never sold, at least at a retail store. Most of those bands actually like that people will go to the effort to DVR and re-watch their concerts.

Your first post insinuates that I prefer to pirate something rather than compensate the owner which is not the case. The issue is much more complex with who actually owns the rights, who has the sayso on the final products. I would pay not anything for the current file I have, which was probably the MO of the broadcaster.

In many modern contracts for live gigs, the band has the most control, they decide who can broadcast and which songs. Coldplay deserves respect bc they said FU EMI and let all the summer festivals broadcast their newest (unreleased) songs to the dismay of their record label EMI.

I've personally heard all sides of the spectrum on bootlegging issues, from artists, international tour managers, and record execs.
I'm willing to continue this conversation as long as we keep it civil as you and I have so far.

You misunderstood my first post: it was simply that the DVD/BR version would not have the broadcaster bugs on screen.
