Howdy All

Hope everyone is safe and well :)

I have both Final Cut Pro and iMovie. Several years ago, I created some shorts for a business of mine at the time, made entirely of B-Roll. If memory serves, I did these on iMovie, but not 100% sure on that. Here is a link to one of them:

I now have a new biz and want to repurpose these for that biz, but to do that, I'll need to change out the title cards at the back of the shorts. Sadly, because these were done so long ago, I don't have the production files. Looking for some workaround ideas? Its been awhile since Ive edited, Im sure Im a little rusty. I was thinking I could drop in a black slug over the current back title card, then a new title card ontop of that, but I can't get it to work on iMovie. And all the backgrounds are anything but black. Like I said, its been awhile.

I would appreciate some help.

Thanks
Bob

Unfortunately, that won't work because I need to retain the VO and music bed.

Yes, you can do that in iMovie. Just split the video in the Timeline either side of the part that you don't want, delete that part and then insert the new bit.

No need to split and discard the old titles... just add a black (or other) image as a background for the new titles... just add them above your timeline (where you will put the new titles)...

If it's cleaner, you CAN split the video at the beginning/end... then in FCPx, detach the audio for the "throw-away" segments... then replace the throw-away parts with the new parts and use the detached audio as the audio for the new title sections.

Just detach the audio, save it, and use it for the new title sections.

So workflow, its been years since I've used FCP 10 or whatever number I'm on, lol - I can fade to black earlier- the VO and music bed remains, drop in my slug and then the title over that- then done?

Personally, how I would do it is:
  1. Load the original clip into the time line.
  2. Identify the point at which the existing content would remain
  3. Drop a generator item over the video clip to end at the point where you want to keep the existing clip (you could add a fade to black transition to the END of that clip)
  4. Drop your title slides over the generator item

That sounds like a fix for FCP. Here is the same for iMovie.

Place a Black Background above the section that you want to replace. It should automatically act as a "Cutaway"; ie, the screen goes black but your original audio keeps playing. If not, use the Video Overlay option in the Menubar above the Preview viewer to select Cutaway.

Then drop a "Title" above that and edit as required.

So, you do it in iMovie EXACTLY the same way as you do in FCPx. Thanks for clarifying.
