I have a beige G3 266 running system 8.5, and a Blue white G3 (accelerated to G4 500)running OS X that I want to network with a crossover cable. I’ve used a couple online tutorials to get this to work, but something's not right.
In the File Sharing control panel on the 8.5 G3 there is no “Allow users to connect via TCP/IP” option.
In the Appletalk control panel there is no “Ethernet” option- just “Printer” “Modem” and “Remote Only”. Is “Remote Only” the Ethernet option? That’s how I have it set. Also there is no Appleshare icon visible in the Chooser!? I have my 8.5 G3s hard disk open for sharing, but it doesn’t show up on the OS X when I “Connect to Server”
Any Ideas?
Thanks!
Glen

Sounds like the Ethernet extension is disabled if it's not showing up as a transport option in AppleTalk. Check the extension manager to make sure "Built-In Ethernet" is activated.

Thanks tiktok-

That extension was disabled. I now have the ethernet option back, and the Appleshare icon returned to the chooser, but the OS X machine is still not seeing the server. The File sharing control panel still doesn't have an "Allow Users Connect Via TCP/IP" option. I'm starting to wonder if I have a bad crossover cable.
Thanks again for your help!
Glen
