Hello to you all. So I have this large usb called seagate, and I want to use it as a normal usb without the time machine back up. I managed to disable that. I only intend on using iCloud for the back up part. However, every time I try to put a file in the seagate usb, I have to put a password and it's really annoying. I was advised how to disable it but my current configuration of the Mac is old. It is the macOS HighSierra version 10.13.6
I was told to tap on Apple ID and select 'media and purchases' then press 'password settings and toggle off the 'require password'
But I can't access that stuff. I was told on this version of Mac, to access the Apple ID from iCloud but still couldn't get there. any help would be appreciated.

So very much to unpack here...

Was the USB drive ever used for Time Machine backups? Do you care whether you keep these old backups?

iCloud is not a backup service. I wouldn't trust iCloud with any important files. Be prepared for them to disappear or lose edits/versions.

If you don't care whether you keep the old backups then open Disk Utility and erase the USB drive, reformatting the drive as GUID partition map and file system as HFS+.

Hope this helps.

Hi there. Thanks for the help. I managed to get it working, where there is no such need for a password each file I add into it. I erased the seagate and now its fine. I prefer not to work the time machine back up for now at least. I am going to upload my stuff on iCloud too. I have heard from a friend that in iCloud, if you upload a file for instance an essay, and you have it in iCloud, when you edit it after on the computer, it will update on iCloud. Don't know how accurate that statement is. I have yet to use iCloud. just the seagate usb which I use just as any ordinary usb, with no time machine backup.

Theoretically correct. In practice, no guarantees. Caveat emptor.

I get that dude. I made the distinction between an ordinary usb and the seagate because the seagate has crazy amount of space. But it suits me for the time being to have it as just a usb. Any new files or whatever it is, after backing everything up on the seagate and iCloud, I will put in a specific folder, so I know the difference and know what I am doing. Then, I can easily add the folder into the backups.
