The other day I was mucking about on my 700 Mhz eMac when I thought, 'hey, I haven't tryed OS 9 for a while!'
OS 9 is no longer installed on this machine cos i don't need it anymore but in a moment of nostalgia-induced mania I decided to try to reinstall OS 9. This is in itself not a stupid thing to do, I just wanted to see if I could do it without wiping OS X. The only problem in this previously foolproof plan was the fact that the last time I formatted my HD I unchecked the "install OS 9 drivers" box in diskutility when I was partitioning my HD. The OS 9 install disk therefore had no problem in booting my Mac it just wouldn't see the disk - obviously. I just thought **** it and booted up into OS X again. I then had wee look around the install disk and found a few cool things - fonts like palatino (now I can recreate apple adverts JOY!) that I must have lost when I last instaled Jaguar.
I then saw (or possibly moved back into - I cant remember) the system folder on the install disk. I though - "maybe this'll work if I just copy it to my HD". I knew that at least classic could work without OS 9 drivers. SO i copied the folder to my hard drive and tried to boot classic. Classic started to boot and the tears came flooding back - its been long time - until it said "OS 9 will only boot from the original disk and will not work when copied to another disk". Ah well thought I and just as I was about to trash the OS 9 folder the icon changed to the normal OS 9 systemn folder icon ie.the folder with a big 9 on it.
I thought, why dont i try booting to it, what harm can it do, if it doesnt work Ill just boot back up holding option - forgetting that this only works with seperate HD's or patitions!
So i tried to boot OS 9 and to my horror I got the floppy with a flashing question mark.
Bollocks though I as no amount of restarting with whatever held down could get me into an OS where I could see the disks and both my OS 9 and OS X install disks will only allow me to format the HD (the OS X one will allow me to format partition actually).
the only thing is that there is some pretty critical stuff on both partitions - on my system on are my Uni essays and on my audio one is a few short fils in progress and all the stuff i've recorded in the past year and a half.
Therefore I need some way of either accessing the disk and delleting the OS 9 folder and boot roms or of non-destructivley installin OS X to my second partition.
I thought that maybe a firewire target mode linkup would, even if it wouldnt allow me to delete OS 9, let me copy my essays bt idunno if thats a OS thing. I though making a boot disk that would let me access the dusk and do the same things but i dunno if that wil work. I have acces to a few other Macs but id rather be sure of sucess beforeattempting anything.
Any help is appreiciated!
